Model Context Protocol (MCP) started as an Anthropic project in late 2024. By 2026, it's become the universal standard for connecting AI models to external tools, data sources, and services. If you're using AI for anything beyond chat, you're probably using MCP — even if you don't realise it.

The 2026 Roadmap
MCP is now managed by the Linux Foundation with an active community governance model. The 2026 roadmap focuses on four priorities:
- Transport evolution — Making Streamable HTTP work better at scale with horizontal scaling and stateless sessions
- Agent communication — Improving the Tasks primitive for multi-step agent workflows
- Governance maturation — Faster SEP (Spec Enhancement Proposal) processing through Working Group delegation
- Enterprise readiness — Audit trails, SSO integration, gateway behaviour
The explicit decision: no new transports this cycle. Keeping the protocol simple is a core design principle.
Getting Started
If you're using Claude Desktop or Cursor, MCP is already available. The fastest path to useful:
- Install an existing MCP server (
npx -y @anthropic/mcp-server-filesystem) - Add it to your tool's config
- Restart and test
For custom needs, writing your own server is straightforward. The TypeScript and Python SDKs handle protocol details. You just define tools and implement the logic.
Why This Matters
MCP is infrastructure that disappears when it works well. You don't think about it — you just ask your AI tool to query your database, and it does.
